Armavir, west of Yerevan in the fertile Ararat Plain, is the spiritual heart of Armenia. It is home to the seat of the Armenian Apostolic Church, surrounded by some of the country’s oldest archaeological remains.

Etchmiadzin Cathedral

The spiritual center of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Etchmiadzin Cathedral is considered the oldest cathedral in the world. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, it remains the seat of the Catholicos, head of the Armenian Church.

The Ruins of Zvartnots

Nearby, the remains of Zvartnots Cathedral, dating from the 7th century, reflect a uniquely circular architecture. Also a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is one of Armenia’s most iconic monuments despite its ruined state.

The Metsamor Archaeological Site

Metsamor is a major archaeological site whose occupation dates back to the 5th millennium BCE. The local museum showcases discoveries related to ancient metallurgy, burial traditions and early astronomical observations.

Sardarapat and national memory

Armavir Province is also the site of the 1918 Battle of Sardarabad, a decisive event that led to the founding of the first Republic of Armenia.
