Gegharkunik, one of Armenia’s largest regions, is built entirely around Lake Sevan. This region in the east-center of the country is home to ancient monasteries, remarkable natural landscapes and places steeped in spirituality.<\/p>\n
Lake Sevan, located at an altitude of 1,900 meters, is the largest lake in Armenia and one of the most important in the Caucasus. Its basin covers most of the Gegharkunik region. Its crystal-clear waters offer opportunities for swimming, fishing and relaxation.<\/p>\n
Overlooking Lake Sevan, Sevanavank Monastery dates back to the 9th century. Its two remarkably preserved churches offer spectacular views over the lake and surrounding mountains.<\/p>\n
Also located on the shores of Lake Sevan, Hayravank Monastery dates from the 9th to 12th centuries. Its remote setting and distinctive architecture make it a favorite stop for visitors to the region.<\/p>\n
Not far from Hayravank, the village of Noratus is home to the largest collection of khachkars (carved cross-stones) in Armenia, some dating back to the late 10th century. It is the country’s most important site of its kind.<\/p>\n
The famous Geghard Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site, lies just across the border in the neighboring Kotayk province, about an hour’s drive from the Gegharkunik region. Many visitors combine a trip to Lake Sevan with a stop at Geghard.<\/p>\n
Access: The region is well connected by road from Yerevan.
Best time to visit: May to October.
